In Media Res

Bodily movement changes a field of eyes, text, and projected forms.

Interactive installation with motion sensing and projection2025

A participant facing responsive projected text and a moving form in a gallery.
01A participant encounters the responsive projection.

In Media Res uses the body to change a visual environment. A Kinect sensor registers participants’ positions and movement; software running on a pocket PC updates three visual components in response. Eyes, text, and moving forms shift as someone moves through the space.

The components—“to be perceived,” “to do,” and “to think”—place perception, action, and reflection in relation to one another. I am interested in how space shapes the experience of being, and how that experience changes when seeing also means being seen. The participant’s body is both the point from which the installation is encountered and something the installation perceives.

Movement through the space alters the projected imagery across three visual components.

Presented in Unbounded Territories at Evanston Art Center, 2025.
